Principal centro de investigación y educación de las ciencias naturales, establecido en la ciudad de Nueva York en 1869.
Fue pionero en organizar expediciones en terreno y crear dioramas y otras exhibiciones naturalistas para mostrar los hábitats naturales con su vida animal y vegetal. Sus colecciones de investigación contienen decenas de millones de especímenes, y sus colecciones de insectos y fósiles están entre las mayores del mundo. El Museo realiza investigaciones en antropología, astronomía, entomología, herpetología, ictiología, biología de invertebrados, mamalogía, mineralogía, ornitología y paleontología de vertebrados, y mantiene estaciones de investigación permanentes en Las Bahamas, y en los estados de Nueva York, Florida y Arizona en EE.UU. También alberga uno de los planetarios más grandes del mundo.
